DIY Fairy Garden

With Spring here, I decided to upcycle an old chair I found curbside into a fairy garden. Michael's has some adorable fairy garden items now! It's like playing with my childhood doll house but outside!

This is what the chair looked like when I found it curbside. I cut the seat out & wrapped it in chicken wire.

I wish I had picked up a coconut liner to go on top of the chicken wire but instead I used a black trash bag. So far, this is holding up just fine, it has been about two months since I planted this chair.

I cut the top section off of the trash bag & opened the bag up, placing the bottom of the trash bag in the center of the chair and wrapped it over the sides.

We poked several holes in the bag for drainage with a skewer.

Fill with potting soil and your desired plants. I found mine at Home Depot.

I cut off the excess bag around the edges and dry brushed a pale purple on the chair. The natural wood wasn't doing it for me.

(These are iPhone pictures.)

And what the garden looks like two months later! It's filling in a lot so I have to cut some stems off occasionally that grow into the pathway.

The white flowers should grow larger and start to hang down, helping cover up the trash bag. The bright green plant in the right corner is already starting to grow down!

DIY Faux Shiplap

Shiplap is the greatest thing to hit home décor! With four children, two under the age of two, it's just not easy to cut planks & all that jazz right now. Hopefully some day in the future we can install real shiplap, but for now this is the next best thing for us!

It started out as using a black color pencil and I could have stopped there! It looked great with the color pencil lines! It went really fast and that's what I wanted.

Here are several images with the color pencil! I wish I would have stopped there. It was softer than with the black paint.

I ordered new handles for all the doors but they haven't arrived yet.

I was going to paint the doors and trim in "Bright White" by Behr but decided to keep everything the same color in Behr "Falling Snow."

What the doors looked like not painted!! It's amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do!

It's not perfect but I'm happy with the end result! It has livened up this space so much and it makes me happy to walk into this hallway now.
I used a fine tip paint brush and painted over the color pencil lines by hand. The lines ane not perfect so you might want to tape off lines if you want them perfect. This step would have taken me too long so, I did it by hand.

This is how I did the lines. This is a small area so using a sewing tape measure was perfect for all the little areas. It's flexible and easy to use with just one hand.

Start by measuring from the ground up, I did 7." I think 8" is typical but this was a small space & 8" seemed too large.

Make a mark on one side of your wall & then do the other side.

I would then hold the tape measure across to both lines and draw it across.

I would then fill in the line darker with the color pencil!

I did paint the baseboards and trim after this picture!

The rest of the images are with the black painted lines. I just used a fine tip paint brush and went over all of the color pencil.....wish I didn't:(

I made the "be still & know" sign above the door. It's from one of my favorite bible quotes.

The rug is from Target, the chalkboard sign is from Kirkland's & I bought the baskets on the wall from a yard sale.

What do you all think? My husband doesn't like it...lol
If you can't have the real thing, fake it! For now I would rather have this than nothing. It has added so much life to this small space and looks good from every angle now.
